Help and input needed!

Hi Everyone,

We are working hard to bring an improved file uploader to the next installment of SocialEngine, but have run into a bit of a snag. For those of you who have purchased/played with the new Music Plugin, you know that the Java uploader we used doesn't always work correctly. So in trying to get to the root of the problem, might I ask you to take a few moments of your time and head over to this site: http://brett.socialengine.net/social/javadebug.php

This is a quick information collector I've put together that will help me determine exactly where the problems are occuring. I spent from 8am yesterday, to 2am this morning trying to get to the bottom of this. The end result: apparently there is a gnome in the system causing havoc for people he threatened by (joke).

We are looking into several other file upload applications, but we really would like to make this one work as it covers a wide range of uses and has some awesome features (Especially for the albums plugin, as it has a basic image editor built in which will allow your users to edit the files as they are uploading them to your site).

So please, take a couple of minutes and head over to http://brett.socialengine.net/social/javadebug.php

If you have multiple browsers on your computer, or even multiple computers that would be even better, this is just to help us find where exactly it's breaking, and for whom.

Thank you all in advanced!

- Brett

@Ward: Great man! May be it might be handy for you someday.
@Brett: In the mean time can you please have someone make a tutorial for putting the classified in the home page? I tried convicing Alex but the guy is not budging :)
I am willing to pay if necessary....Thanks a lot...

All the planning in the world can't stop you from hitting that Raccoon though, heh. We're working on replacing the Java uploader right now, until we can figure out why it broke in the first place. Should have some details on it soon. Thank you all for your patience.
Ward - 11:55 AM on Jul. 1, 2008  [ message ]
Good scenario, Ruptan ... Goes to show if you don't pre plan your trip (business plan) .... your going to run into trouble and not get your product delivered on time which means a whole lotta P'd off customers. Heh, and this is coming from an actual truck driver ;)
gmilardo - 8:46 AM on Jul. 1, 2008  [ message ]
@macosfan
You can add multiple items at once as well. Just hold shift and choose the items to upload.
OpenMods - 7:54 AM on Jul. 1, 2008  [ message ]
@gmilardo
it looks nice, but we need one like the one they are already using. you can choose multiple items and upload them all at once.
ruptan1 - 7:15 AM on Jul. 1, 2008  [ message ]
@Brett, Nope. I did not have any problem with facebook. It loaded right. I know you are trying your hard and soul to fix this problem..but may be we need a different approach then what you taking. There was this story....this truck was going under this overpass and suddenly it got caught on the top. So everyone was telling the driver to cut the top of the truck or break the overpass underneath and let the truck pass through. There was this little kid who was watching all this hype and told that if you lower the air of the truck, then it should pass the overpass easily and that happened. So lets try another approach and we can do it....You can do it Bretttt!

Brett,

I tried the java applet and in multiple PC it crashed. It also uses too much resources.. I found two scripts that you should use instead of java.
This scripts should also be used in the pictures. Links below.

http://swfupload.org/ New version 2.1
http://demo.swfupload.org/ (Demo)
http://demo.swfupload.org/applicationdemo/index.php (This should be used for photo uploads, very slick. It makes thumbnails when completed)

http://digitarald.de/project/fancyupload/2-0/showcase/photoqueue/ (This is another cool upload script, again no java applet, very web 2.0)

Oh yea, I recognize this tool.. it's jumploader, it has great functions. This is cool.
It works fine here btw: windows XP, IE7, FF2, Safari3

@JiveMeister - Actually, the 'J' in AJAX is for JavaScript (AJAX = Asynchronous JavaScript And XML), but often the XML is actually JSON. Java and JavaScript are very different, with very little in common actually.

@Charlotte, Brett - While I'm somewhat sceptical about a Java uploader, the cropping/resizing etc. sounds interesting, though how is resizing going to work alongside the GD based auto-resizing?
Mike - 12:34 PM on Jun. 30, 2008  [ message ]
Holy, we're still trying to figure out how to fix this thing lol? I think we should just scrap it and use another uploader or something :S

For me, it froze (locked up) the browser every time, with both IE and FF as soon as I tried to load the page with the Java applet on it. I don' think there were any errors, at least not that I knew of.
thirdgruv - 11:42 AM on Jun. 30, 2008  [ message ]
FF 3.0 worked on facebook for photo upload. Facebook also showed the coffee cup, but it loaded faster than your current set-up.

As far as your test, it did not work for me in FF3. It made it to page 2 and the java cup kept looping. I had to shut the browser down.
clare - 11:00 AM on Jun. 30, 2008  [ message ]
Just tried facebook uploader Brett, works fine for me, but then so does your uploader, :-)
They seem very similar, but facebook didnt show the big annoying java pic whilst loading the uploader which was a bonus i guess.
Brett - 10:48 AM on Jun. 30, 2008  [ message ]
Has anyone had trouble using the Facebook Java-based uploader?

And for those of you who have done the debug, and failed on the first Java page, are you seeing errors, or is the browser just locking up?
nowornever - 5:46 PM on Jun. 29, 2008  [ message ]
Hey brett, its brett here. Just a thought but if its possible could the music be included in the search engine.

Just a thought.
JiveMeister - 4:16 PM on Jun. 29, 2008  [ message ]
From what I know the J in AJAX is Java right? But anyway, networks like facebook and multiply also use Java uploaders and they dont have 100% hardcore, net savvy users. Just make it lightweight and easy as well as effective, there should be no problems

Re: Uploader

For me, any uploader would do as long as its better and faster than the current one we use for album. Just some important thing to consider when choosing an uploader:

- Simple to use (general user doesn't like complicated things - they are not admins or developer)
- Faster (no point if it takes time to load when you haven't even started yet)
- It works (not good when a user spend time to upload only to find out that the album is empty after) This happened to myself a few times and to some of my users
- Works on Internet explorer (I like Firefox myself but a lot of user still use Internet Explorer)
- Does not require user to download anything to make it work

Charlotte - 1:18 PM on Jun. 29, 2008  [ message ]
The other cool thing about the Java uploader, at least with regard to the album plugin, is that users will be able to do some simple image manipulation before uploading (cropping, resizing, etc).
VinlandViking - 12:19 PM on Jun. 29, 2008  [ message ]
@GB,DertyLee and Ward - AJAX is neat and all, but you cannot get an upload progress bar without either Java, Flash or possibly Perl. I don't think Perl is a good option for something like SE, due to installation issues.
Ward - 10:01 AM on Jun. 29, 2008  [ message ]
Charlotte, Josh, Brett, John ... and everyone else that knows anything about coding - How hard would it be to have just "one" Uploader ... One Ajax Uploader .... that users can upload everything from photos, music to videos and just be able to select where they are being uploaded to.

I'm thinking, when I log into my Homepage, all I want to do is click on one Upload button and an Ajax window pops up and I can go to town with my media ... instead of having to go from plugin to plugin with my uploads?

Is there any way to think ahead into the future of Media publishing. I don't know much about coding, but it seems like were following the crowd instead of pushing a path of our own. Take a look at this photo of what this site and see what itallows you to do. Thanks.

DertyLee - 9:47 AM on Jun. 29, 2008  [ message ]
I agree with GB that ajax would me preferred.

Mac OS X 10.5.3 - FF 2.0.0.4
Works just fine!
GB - 7:34 PM on Jun. 28, 2008  [ message ]
At a time where everyone is trying to maximize compatibility by abandoning third party stuff such as java and flash, why go there?

Can we please use ajax instead?

I got nothing on the Page 2 & 3. There is only messages and the Next button.
Firefox 3 on Windows XP SP3.

It causes my pc to freeze. I have to use Task Manager to resolve. I use latest version of FF.
VinlandViking - 5:19 AM on Jun. 28, 2008  [ message ]
Opera 9.5 (Windows XP Pro, SP2) worked fine for me.
I did get a notice about the applet requiring permissions that could potentially harm my computer, and that the signature could not be verified. Hopefully this is not something our users will see(?).

Also tested on Firefox 2.0.0.14 (Win XP Pro, SP2), worked fine.

Worked once out of 5 times on firefox. Here's my firefox info:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14

Didn't work at all with Windows Internet Explorer:

Version: 7.0.5730.13

Not even the single file upload works on my personal site.

Windows XP Service Pack 2
On first try it freezed on firefox 3. It was saying that applet is loaded but it was showing nothing.
With internet explorer 7 it worked fine.
I had to download and reinstall the java applet to make firefox3 work.
On Opera 9.50 it's not loading the applet

@Peter,

Is the entire page blank? And does your browser freeze on the second page, or just not load the uploader?
peter - 4:00 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
Still doesn't work a tall for me on mac with firefox. just a blank page!
thirdgruv - 3:07 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
I have a fully up to date Windows Vista SP1, core duo 1.7, 2 GB of ram and the following did or did not work -
1. FF 3.0 kept looping on page two with the coffee cup. It actually froze and wouldn't let me close the browser down. i had o do ctrl-alt-dlt to initiate the task master.
2. IE8b1 same as FF, but also indicated new module needed to be enable (didn't load page 2). I went and enabled the java console and went back to page 2 and it looped just like FF. another task master shut down for the browser, (but it is a beta).
3. Opera 9.26 - worked as designed
4. safari 3.1.2 - worked as designed.
gionmeri - 2:58 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
It works fine! The only thing is that it's slow to load! Up to 40 secs....
Brett - 2:42 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
Some known problems are with Windows XP and IE7 or Firefox 2, but it only occurs for some people. I'm hoping to collect enough data here to figure out the exact problem :)
derdude - 2:42 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
Took round about 30 seconds to load the applet first time.
But after that it did what it should do.
clare - 2:40 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
Just for interest's sake Mike have you tried the new Firefox 3 ?, its available. Dunno about the uploader but its much less laggy generally than FF 2. That's what i was using in my test below.
Mike - 2:35 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
I mean to say "I hate Java", not "I have Jave" lol.
Mike - 2:35 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
There's definitely something still wrong here lol, because if freezes Firefox for me -everyone- time. I have Firefox 2.0.0.14. Internet Explorer gets to Page 2, shows the square orange Java thing, but doesn't do anything else. Okae, now Internet Explorer has froze. Ha! I have Java.
I'm using an Acer Aspire 3680, 1.46 GHz, 512MB ram, FF 2.0.0.14, and IE 7, and nothing's ah workin' for meh.
clare - 1:29 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
"That's it! If you've made it to this page, then the Java uploader fully works!"
Yep - its all good! Was fairly slow to load the uploader. (iMac non-intel)

It does work ... however, I was having a hard time dragging files. You have to click on the file once (highlight), click twice and then drag. Nothing major, just something different from what I'm used to.
Friends - 1:19 PM on Jun. 27, 2008  [ message ]
It is a bit slow. And a security warning pops up. I think my users will get worried about anything like this.
