v3 Public Beta
5:10 PM on Jul. 4, 2008
Hey there everyone,

I am finally announcing the public beta of SocialEngine v3. We are still wrapping up some small things with it and will be working on the beta over the weekend and during next week, but we invite you to check it out, tell us what you think, and report any bugs you might find with it. Additionally, Alex will be making changes to the frontend, so if you have any minor suggestions, feel free to pass them along.

Also, to that end, I have created a group on the community to post your bugs and ideas about v3. Here it is:

http://community.socialengine.net/group.php?group_id=93

Rather than posting in the comments, if you would like us to address the issue, post it as its own discussion topic. Check to make sure there aren't any discussion topics with the same report, first though, so we can keep everything organized. The goal here is to iron out all the bugs and kinks before we release v3 to you guys to play with on your own servers.

Keep in mind that none of the plugins are installed here. The public plugin pages will appear in the top menu bar where it says "Example Plugin" and the user will be able to access their plugin control panels via the "My Apps" dropdown. Again, thank you all for your suggestions regarding the layout, they were extremely helpful (particularly those that were in the form of images).

Finally, I should remind you that many of the changes made in v3 were useful to the admin - if you would like to know whether something can be turned on/off, simply ask. If you would like to see something changed to a different setting, I can do that for you as well.

So, without further ado, here is the link to the v3 beta site:

http://72.47.252.45/home.php

Have at it, guys, let's hear your opinions!

The v3 beta site link is not working... :(
Charlotte - 9:16 AM on Aug. 13, 2008  [ message ]
@ruptan1 - The "going to a previous page even if you are logged out" is a browser caching issue. If you hit the back button, it will load the cached page. If you then click refresh on that page, it'll show you as not being logged in.
ruptan1 - 8:05 AM on Aug. 13, 2008  [ message ]
I have two issues in the beta site:
1. If you click on the back button of your browser you can go to your previous page even if you are logged out.
2. In the profile page..the left informations like blog, statistics are not alligned. They are a bit crooked.
Thanks

@ gmiraldo - Maybe a "My Feeds" page included in our Blogs section where we can click on our friends feeds, as well as feeds that you have subscribed to ALL in an Activity Feed type layout. And adding Videos and Pictures in a Wordpress WYSWIG whatever you call it, is a no brainer!

Everyone: Please check out the layout / design for ALL of our Plugins at http://community.socialengine.net/group_discussion_view.php?group_id=105&grouptopic_id=527. An example layout is on the bottom at http://truckingreform.moonfruit.com/ where we can view all of our plugins all in one page using a Tag Cloud / Digg like layout.
gmilardo - 6:37 AM on Aug. 5, 2008  [ message ]
Blogs, should have a subscribe to, so we can follow the persons blog. WE should be able to browse blogs, and or search, and an option to see friends blogs. Also a easier way to attach video and images.
Socialr - 2:42 AM on Aug. 5, 2008  [ message ]
I noticed the change in thumbnails...pretty neat now.
MD - 8:42 AM on Jul. 24, 2008  [ message ]
I agree with mysecretcombination - tags and a tag cloud. Tag cloud on the home page too. Get people clicking, searching and enjoying the site.
mysecretcombination - 7:18 AM on Jul. 24, 2008  [ message ]
if you upgrade the blog plugin, it would be great if the user could use tags or at least be able to define his own categories for the posts! thanks for a great product!
Kenny - 3:37 PM on Jul. 22, 2008  [ message ]
Can anyone let me know - will the main plugins be upgraded as well?
i.e. blogs, classifieds, albums, etc.?
Thanks,
Kenny

@Ward that would be excellent.. a specific number of warnings and then automatic banning... Of course there would need to be a section in the control panel that keeps tracks every time someone is given a warning.
Ward - 9:58 AM on Jul. 21, 2008  [ message ]
Admin User Mode - Yes - With the ability to log in as Invisible ... Maybe later we can get a Report User feature with a 1,2,3,4,5 Warning system where the "Users" moderate the community, instead of the the admins ... This add on will lead to better Time management for the website owner and less finger pointing! Also .... Sorry for the wide screen, Mike made me do it .. lol!
OpenMods - 8:44 AM on Jul. 21, 2008  [ message ]
You only posted your comment 11 days ago :P
I think Charlotte said probably around July 22

-Whistles- ... ((Well, looking at the number of people on the development team for SocialEngine, I'd say in 2-3 weeks...Maybe even longer.
And no offense but Charlotte isn't a god, but shes good at what she does, still, looking at the progress...if it were ME, I'd estimate 2-3 weeks. So by the end of this month? Mmm, who really knows.))

I just felt like throwing my previous statement out there again to some of you...Kinda like "I told you so."
JamesBond321 - 7:41 AM on Jul. 21, 2008  [ message ]
Im all for admin mode user...This is would be an excellent feature..Also, admin user must be able to send bulk PM's to network...This would make life WAY easier for some us....

Do you guys realize, that there are over 90 Topics in the V3 Beta reports already!? Charlotte, break out the wine, start driving ... don't stop and just send us a postcard! (just release V3 before you go, so we can play too while your gone!)
Mike - 11:11 PM on Jul. 18, 2008  [ message ]
LOL hey stop making fun of me, that's not nice LOL. I'm gonna get Charlotte to kick everyone outta here so it's only me and her ;) haha
Ward - 10:50 PM on Jul. 18, 2008  [ message ]
Mike stooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop writing loong words ... lol!!!

Mike is the bug in this bug ... lol!
Mike - 10:37 PM on Jul. 18, 2008  [ message ]
If we post on a comment, or whatever, a long string of letters like wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww........ and so on, it makes the page stretch out horizontally. I hate when people do this lol. Charlotte... can you make it so that puts in a break or something please?
OpenMods - 5:02 PM on Jul. 18, 2008  [ message ]
I agree with eguyana, we need this.
I suggested this before, as "Adminsitrator on Social Network"
eguyana - 4:50 PM on Jul. 18, 2008  [ message ]
V3 looks and feels great so far... It would be great if there was an 'admin' mode where the admin can browse the site and delete comments, remove offensive photos, edit or delete blogs, etc directly from the page. Similar to PHPBB where you can moderate the forum and delete and edit posts as you browse.. Logging in as the user then deleting the offensive photo or blog is a pain.
gulfboy - 2:05 AM on Jul. 17, 2008  [ message ]
@Charlotte : Sorry, and also the Search Option for the users, ex, if they want to find how many users are online of off line from their City or Country. Thanks
gulfboy - 1:48 AM on Jul. 17, 2008  [ message ]
@Charlotte : if you can created plugin for travelling plan where the social network's user can see who will visit their country and also add free social network's templates where the admin can chose that option for available templates, it would be nice. This Social network's can be a dating website too...., more benefit the users :P
gulfboy - 1:12 AM on Jul. 17, 2008  [ message ]
Cool !!!, but if there any possibility for pop-up msg windows.., and msg notice for the incoming pvt msg?
mtvital - 2:03 PM on Jul. 14, 2008  [ message ]
Will there be a cost for upgrading to V3 if we have bought V2.X
Pixel - 10:50 AM on Jul. 14, 2008  [ message ]
Do you have a date for V3 release?

Can we update the old 2.x to the new V3?
Mike - 8:13 PM on Jul. 11, 2008  [ message ]
When can we have access to an Admin Panel beta?
OpenMods - 10:06 AM on Jul. 10, 2008  [ message ]
I guess so. We can see V3.
All features they said it will have. They are just fixing bugs.
Socialr - 9:43 AM on Jul. 10, 2008  [ message ]
You sure the programming part is done?
OpenMods - 9:32 AM on Jul. 10, 2008  [ message ]
@ Socialr
I think it's 2 weeks. I guess the programming part is done.
Alex is now just fixing up the design, so I don't think it will take alot of time.

when will this be available???????
alexsamuel - 4:18 PM on Jul. 9, 2008  [ message ]
Inappropriate content report

As v3 would allow for various profile categories (musicians, music companies etc), can the "report this person" message be controlled via admin panel. e.g business listings could have "report this listing" or "report this page" etc instead of "report this person"
Socialr - 11:20 PM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
Well I forgot something came up, when I remember I'll let you know...
Socialr - 11:19 PM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
An image cropper would make this a very unique social networking platform. Some of you may not see this as something BIG, but when I look at scripts like these, a major thing are the images, and are they aesthetically pleasing for users. I don't see image cropping tools for social networking scripts. That's really taking it a step further. (Could be an upgrade to the "Photo Albums Plugin" maybe?, or integrated with SocialEngine for all images.)

By the way, I also noticed
Jimmy - 8:12 PM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
..an image cropper could actually solve a proper image ratio maybe? :)
Jimmy - 8:09 PM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
Socialr got something right there Charlotte, i know you aren't the designer at this project, witch actually frighten me even more that Alex don't see something like this!!
If a user and maybe potential customer comes to a website where the thumbnails is scaled by the WORST image processing program ever (their browser), they simply just take off again.. HTML image scaling is left to the stone age, i don't buy this script before this is fixed, just as simple is that.. maybe you could make it optional, so that if you don't have the image server app you could tick it off or something in the backend..

I know you can fix this like a tick on the keys Charlotte, you are the freaking queen of the codes u know! :-P
dwallin33 - 11:01 AM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
What will the plugin situation be like? Will existing plugins work with 3.0 or will some modification be necessary? How much modification? Thanks!
Socialr - 10:44 AM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
CHANGE: when will you all fix the image thumbnails? -> just the images in general?
Socialr - 10:43 AM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
when will you all fix the image thumbnails? it seems so...unprofessional and out of place. took me like 3 days to figure out how to make my images in SocialEngine perfect 90x90 and 120x120 and 300x(?) then the original image using Imagemagick, i dont know about GD2..

clientside, when users load pages, they load the images, and they load more than they really need to...it might become a problem later.. resizing a 200x155 to 50x50 looks horrible...

just a suggestion.
Charlotte - 9:34 AM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
@mysecretcombination - It already does! I will probably be releasing v3 platform in a few weeks for you guys to start playing with and customizing. The plugins will come shortly thereafter.
mysecretcombination - 8:20 AM on Jul. 8, 2008  [ message ]
Great job!

Will First Name/ Last name work with auto suggest on the messaging system?

is there a rough estimate for the release? 1-2 months or more? we have already purchased the previous version and have started customizing it (first/last name) but it now probably makes sense to press pause and wait for the new version before we go live. thanks for being so quick to take in our requirement and make it a reality!
asianslike - 11:04 PM on Jul. 7, 2008  [ message ]
is there a way that we could have two simultaneous feeds on the same page (1 for your friends only and one for whole network?)
Alex - 6:03 PM on Jul. 7, 2008  [ message ]
@ tonycorrigan - yes, the relevant plugins (e.g. blogs, albums, groups, etc.) will have their own tabs on the profile.
dwallin33 - 10:13 AM on Jul. 7, 2008  [ message ]
Some really good usability improvements in this next release. I hope you guys take seriously the comments about the group discussions - I think that is a core part of any social networking site, and crucial to ensuring community 'stickyness'.
tonycorrigan - 9:24 PM on Jul. 6, 2008  [ message ]
I like the changes!
Will the tabs in the 'Profile' page for 'comments' be extended to other types of user content? For example a 'tab' for the users gallery for instance.
samd007 - 10:03 PM on Jul. 5, 2008  [ message ]
Have you seen Radcodes Article Plugin? ............... Those are all the features we expected from SE Blogs plugin (in fact it a little modification of SE Blogs plugin only). If you could provide same in Blogs, then we don't need a WP integration. In other words, it doesn't make sense for us buying SE Blogs plugin @40$ & again Radcodes Article plugin @80$.
Socialr - 7:20 PM on Jul. 5, 2008  [ message ]
love it...
dcunited - 4:25 PM on Jul. 5, 2008  [ message ]
I love it, however one thing I really dislike about the profile page is that the headers need a bar in order to visually differentiate between each section ie. recent activity, contact, etc........
blackgold - 12:41 PM on Jul. 5, 2008  [ message ]
Looks good so far i love it.
Profile edit: all fields empty on edit, this should not be.
Brithday: feature does not update
Search: No search facility so you cannot see whos already on the site.
Profile comments: don't work you cannot leave comments for members.
Do we have access to the admin section?
Those are my first pass, i will look into it more closely lata.

Hi Charlottte,

Can't wait to get it! Looks really cool and nice!

Thanks,

is there will be an option to turn off/on username ? in the admin ?
mehedi - 1:19 AM on Jul. 5, 2008  [ message ]
ok a little suggestion: when a comment is clicked "edit", a new button should appear saying "submit"... I had no idea you were meant to click "edit" again
mehedi - 1:14 AM on Jul. 5, 2008  [ message ]
It certainly looks better, nice work... can't wait to see the plugins.
ladyPHP - 11:04 PM on Jul. 4, 2008  [ message ]
Very very nice work Charlotte.....

You guys rock!

Please replace the icons with png's :)
alexsamuel - 6:18 PM on Jul. 4, 2008  [ message ]
Thanks you so much for the "Mutual Friends". Would like to see what changes you have included in search options?
Hope "MY Network" has some search features. Like the framework of the SE design.
Will give further comments after design changes are completed.
Alex - 5:12 PM on Jul. 4, 2008  [ message ]
I'd just like to add that I will be making many more front-end changes over the next week as you all test out the beta. Also, I'll be replacing many of the tables with divs throughout the code, so bear with me if this look funny! :)
