The whole reason a person would come to an SE site is to break away from the "herd" and find there own Niche community and/or Groups. Think of the community as a building where, when you walk into it, it's filled with a lot of rooms (groups) ...
What your doing right now is adding a way to chat in the hallway, but when we go into our rooms (groups) we are only allowed to leave sticky notes! As these communities get larger, the hallway is going to get rather noisy ... So by adding chat to the groups (instead of the main), your giving members a way to branch off and congregate within their own specified interest groups!
For example, Charlotte is working on the Album plugin. So right now, she could have posted a blog entry announcing an "V3 Album meeting" via Chat in the Album Group tonight at 8:00 PM Central .... ??????
Hey John, although you are a very gifted coder as well as the others here at SE .... My only request is to not reinvent the wheel! .... We have other standard core things that are lacking and ModMySocialEngine has already integrated FlashChat within SE for $35! I would say that if your going to try and add another Chat, why not do something different and add it to our Groups? At least by doing so, it's new and not a reproducion of something that is already there. Again ... Just my thoughts ....
